First International Congress

Centre for Research in Economics and
 Comparative Development (CIDEC)

11 and 12 September 2025 • 09H00 - 16H00 • Auditorium 1 — Universidade Lusíada [Lisbon]

PRESENTATION

The First International Congress of the Center for Research in Economics and Comparative Development (CIEDEC), established at Lusíada University of Lisbon in June 2024, marks the center’s official international launch. The event will present the most recent developments in comparative development and quantitative economic history. Recent years have seen a flourishing of new research in this field, building on a rich tradition of empirical and comparative analysis. The conference will showcase papers that deal broadly with quantitative economic history, encompassing both detailed empirical analyses and broader comparative studies.

The programme features papers covering a wide array of topics in quantitative economic history and comparative development, including long-term growth, industrialization, trade, labor markets, inequality, health, public finance, institutions, geography, and culture. Contributions also include reconstructions of long-run series of prices, wages, and GDP, providing historical depth to present-day economic challenges. By promoting methodological and thematic diversity, the conference aims to foster a deeper and more comprehensive understanding of the economic past and its implications for contemporary institutions and policy.
