OVERVIEW
"Formulas in Architecture" is the name of the seminars on Architecture and Mathematics that CITAD – Research Center in Territory, Architecture and Design – has been organizing since 2014.
The close connection that has always existed between the disciplines of mathematics and of architecture, often translated through geometry, is the fundamental fact that underlies the transformation of continuous infinite space into finite architectural space. Numbers, created by reason, have served and continue to serve Man in his integration, development and the use of the natural environment that he has occupied to live there. The quantification of space and all that exists in it is a way to make comprehensible and accessible on a human scale this once intangible world, opening up the possibility of dominance and transformation, in a dialectical action of constant adaptation.
The main purpose of these seminars is to explore the relationships between the disciplines of architecture and mathematics, knowing that the synergy between areas of knowledge can contribute to their mutual evolution and to the creation of new ideas and a better capability for a balanced development of the world in which we live, intervene and transform.
Organized and promoted from the beginning by CITAD researchers Maria de Fátima Silva and Elsa do Rosário Negas, the "Formulas in Architecture" seminars on architecture and mathematics have had the participation of numerous researchers, addressing diverse topics, from multiple perspectives. In this 5th edition, we highlight the presence, as keynote speakers, of Alberto Reaes Pinto, from Universidade Lusíada, Nora Lombardini, from Ingegneria delle Costruzioni e Ambiente Costruito Politecnico di Milano, and Melik Ziya Yakut, from Süleyman Demirel University.
